What if the path to greater health, energy, mental clarity, emotional balance, and even spiritual well-being didn’t begin with a prescription—but with your next meal?
When we briefly hold our breath, oxygen levels decline slightly while carbon dioxide rises. Although this creates mild, temporary discomfort, it also acts as a beneficial biological stressor—a process known as hormesis or eustress. Like lifting weights or taking a cold shower, a carefully controlled challenge stimulates the body to become stronger rather than weaker.
Most people think that the best way to deal with stress is to avoid it. Surprisingly, one of nature’s most powerful strategies is exactly the opposite.
One of the greatest misconceptions about stress is that all stress is harmful. In reality, there are two very different kinds of stress. Chronic stress—the kind caused by constant worry, poor sleep, unhealthy eating, inactivity, and emotional overload—gradually weakens us. But eustress, or beneficial stress, does exactly the opposite. It makes us stronger.
When people ask me what has helped me thrive at age 84, they often expect me to talk about nutrition, exercise, fasting, sleep, or one of the many lifestyle practices I teach.
Those practices matter. In fact, they are essential.
But there is something even more fundamental that often gets overlooked.
If we want to understand health — real, lasting health — we have to start at the level of the cell. Every movement you make, every thought you think, every heartbeat, every repair process in your body depends on how well your cells are being fueled and supported.
If everyone is different, then nothing is certain.
If nothing is certain, then anything goes.
And if anything goes, most people default to what is easy, familiar, and culturally reinforced—even if it quietly undermines their health.
Most people are taught to think about health in terms of fighting disease. We hear about medications, treatments, and interventions designed to “battle” illness. But one of the most empowering truths about the human body is this: your body is already designed to heal itself.
